Ohana Bowl Paintings

Ohana Luau at the Lake has a tradition of Bowl Dances for charity. They are based on an old tradition in Tiki bars when a scorpion bowl was ordered and a mystery woman would deliver it to the table with a dance. We ordered a traditional Mystery Bowl at the Mai Kai last year.

Ohana being Ohana, took that tradition and spun it on it’s head. A person walks out with a tiki bowl before dinner and everyone bids on: that bowl, refills all night, and have a custom dance presented to them in front of everyone. Some are traditional dances, like the three Lina has done in the past, some add some flair to a traditional dance, like Lina’s done in the past, and some are outrageous.

The opening party has a cocktail contest and we won best costume in 2024 thanks to Lina’s idea to dress up in Mystery Bowls for the “Mystery” theme.

Whenever something cool is created for something at Ohana, everyone says “You should put that in the charity auction”; so we took that to heart and created these paintings from those costumes:

So, as they requested;

Chris made the frames, Lina carved and burned them, and then Chris finished them:

Here’re the paintings we donated to the auction this year:

Too Much Pork For Just One Fork

It all started with an amazing Mystery Bowl Dance by Zsa Zsa Rumwhore called I’ve Got Too Much Pork For Just One Fork, which was immortalized by Rumamok on the award winning Mystery Bowl costumes for the “Mystery” theme opening party in 2024. In true Ohana tradition, people started saying “You should donate those costumes to the Ohana Auction!”

We humbly present the first of a series of paintings cut out of those costumes. This acrylic on canvas was painted by Rumamok in homage to the painting style of traditional Trader Vic’s Scorpion Bowls and was never intended to be surrounded by a 14 5/8” x 25 1/8” x 1 3/16” carved frame burned in the Shou Sugi Ban style and finished with a soft wax finish (Linseed oil and beeswax).

Biscuits and Gravy

This painting is the Inception of Ohana history. We first met our Ohana Luau at the Lake Colonels during the Kon-Tiki Fried Chicken Room Crawl in 2021, which turned into an unforgettable Mystery Bowl Dance by Goatee-Ki and ShortRound in 2023, which was then immortalized by Rumamok on the award winning Mystery Bowl costumes for the “Mystery” theme opening party in 2024.

So, as you requested; we humbly present the second of a series of paintings cut out of those costumes. This acrylic on canvas was painted by Rumamok in homage to the painting style of traditional Trader Vic’s scorpion Bowls and was never intended to be surrounded by a 24 5/8” x 21 1/2” x 1 3/16” carved frame burned in the Shou Sugi Ban style and finished with a soft wax finish (Linseed oil and beeswax).
