I’m so happy to finally complete this project! (thank you corona virus).
A couple of years ago I took a seminar at Tiki Oasis by Eric October called Tiki on Black Paper. During the class, Eric showed us how to make a faux velvet painting using black construction paper, a stencil, and colored pencils.
I found Stonehenge 140# cold-press black watercolor paper that is 100% cotton (not cellulose), holds water just like the white stuff, but is softer and more supple. However, the paper doesn’t hold up to a lot of scrubbing or wear.
The hardest part of doing this project was picking a painting I wanted to do. I found so many inspiration pieces that I wanted to do, but only had a single large sheet of paper. Wasn’t confident about working with this new paint and paper and so made a few practice pieces.
Here’s the actual inspiration painting I worked from. Changed the model, the model’s positioning and the background.
Materials: white and dark water soluble charcoal pencils, #12 and #00 round watercolor brushes, Finetec pearlescent metallic paint, Kuretake gansai tambi in gem, and some cheap Chinese stuff I found (black case).
Here’s the almost completed painting. I stapled the paper to the interior stretching frame. Then stapled into the original frame.
